Hello everybody!
Firstly, I would like to apologise for my writing in english. Unfortunately, I don't know french at all, so I'm reading this forum through Google Translate.
Here's my little story.
I bought my Peugeot 404 '1965 5 years ago in quite poor condition, but most parts seem to be original, except radiator, radiator grill and some others (there seemed to be a little accident and the front of the car was repaired with the grill from Volga GAZ-24 and the radiator from Moskvitch
). At the time I bought it, it was standing still for some years, so all the wheels were stuck. We managed to unblock rear wheels quite easily, but it took about a day of struggle to overcome the front ones. Surely all the break system is out of order.
We tried to start the engine, but the starter was completely silent. I disassembled and repaired the starter, but it still couldn't move the engine. Than we tried to move the car with the gear on, but the engine was completely stuck.
Than it was standing for some time, and lately I continued the repair. During this time I bought some missing parts and books.
The main problem now is to start the engine. Some weeks ago I took off the cylinder head to find out why the engine isn't turning. There was a lot of rust in 1st cylinder. The head is fine, the valves are moving. After an hour of struggle we managed to make one turn, the second one took about 15 minutes
The third took 1 minute, but it was not the victory. I noticed the vertical gap of about 5mm in 1st cylinder, the others were ok. This meant we need to take off the oil pan. I decided to do it without removing the engine. When I took off the pan, I found that there were no bearings on the first connecting rod at all! That's the reason of the gap. So tomorrow I'm going to take all the engine out of the car to make complete repair. So I'll need your advice about the spare parts that can suit.
Oh, I forgot - the engine is 1.6l carburetor one.
The photos are coming soon!
